Day Trip from Krakow to Zakopane: A Solo Female Journey to Poland’s Winter Wonderland
Zakopane is calling your name if you’re searching for a day excursion from Krakow that is similar to entering a real snow globe—without the shuddering! This charming village, which is tucked away at the base of the Tatra Mountains, has a certain charm. Whether you enjoy mountain views, quaint chalets, or squeaky cheese, Zakopane is sure to be a journey you won’t soon forget. Here’s how my one-day trip went and why it might be the getaway you were looking for.

Morning Musings: The Krakow Departure
I began my day in Krakow by getting a cup of coffee from a local favorite that I found when researching the city’s top attractions. I went to Krakow Główny with my reliable backpack and coffee in order to catch an early bus to Zakopane.
Pro Tip: Use an online service like GetYourGuide or FlixBus to purchase your bus tickets in advance. It guarantees that you won’t have to compete with other eager tourists for a spot and is reasonably priced.
The cityscapes soon gave way to picturesque country scenery as the bus pulled away. You may even be fortunate enough to see a flock of sheep grazing. (In my mind, I called one Barbara. She resembled a Barbara.)
First Impressions: Welcome to Zakopane
With wooden chalets and people dressed in traditional Highlander garb, arriving in Zakopane is like entering a set from a Hallmark film. Let me tell you, the scent of smoked cheese with pure mountain air is enticing, and the air is crisp.
I treated myself to a filling breakfast at Karczma Po Zbóju, a restaurant renowned for its traditional Polish fare and cozy Highlander atmosphere, before embarking on my explorations. I chose the smoked cheese with cranberry sauce, or oscypek, which was exquisite and strangely healing.
Gubałówka Funicular: A Ride Above It All
It is impossible to visit Zakopane and not take the funicular ride in Gubałówka. Imagine it as a spiritual rollercoaster, with no loops and only breathtaking vistas of the Tatra Mountains.
I made the decision to stretch my legs first and explore Krupówki Street, Zakopane’s main thoroughfare, as the funicular is only a short walk from the town center. Solo travelers who enjoy people-watching will adore this bustling street, which is packed with eccentric souvenir shops and welcoming cafes.
Pro Tip: Reserve a guided tour that includes funicular skip-the-line if you’re feeling upscale. You’ll need time for all the photo opportunities at the top, so it saves you time.
The Tatra Experience: Hiking or Snow Fun?
After reaching the summit, I couldn’t decide whether to hike around Tatra National Park or have some fun in the snow. I chose the latter since it was winter, and like the grown-up kid I am, I rented a sled and raced down the snowy slopes.

Don’t worry if you’re traveling alone; nobody will see you sledding alone because everyone is too busy having a good time. There are also many walking trails with breathtaking views if you prefer to keep things quiet.
Look into local tour packages for activities like snow activities or guided hikes. They frequently include hot beverages and equipment rentals, which are ideal for meeting new people and being warm.
Lunch with a View: Morskie Oko or Bust
A visit to Zakopane wouldn’t be complete without taking in the stunning mountain lake, Morskie Oko. Although it’s more of a half-day hike, some tours make it doable in a single day by driving you halfway.
Back in town, I chose to have a comfortable lunch at Restauracja Góralska Tradycja, where I ate pierogi (Polish dumplings) and looked out at the mountains. You’ll need it as fuel for the remainder of the day, so treat yourself.
Highlander Culture and Shopping Spree
I took the time to immerse myself in Zakopane’s distinctive Highlander culture before returning to Krakow. I picked up some oscypek cheese and a hand-knit wool scarf to take home as I strolled through the neighborhood market.
If you have the time, think about scheduling a class to learn about Highlander customs or maybe do some crafting yourself. These kinds of experiences create lifelong memories of traveling alone.
The Journey Back: A Perfect End to the Day
My heart was full, and not just from all the pierogi, when I got on the bus to return to Krakow. All of my expectations had been met by Zakopane: adventure, culture, and a dash of humor.
Why You Should Put Zakopane on Your Bucket List
Whether you are an experienced tourist or are just starting out on your own, Zakopane provides the ideal balance of excitement and charm. It’s a location where you may enjoy life’s small pleasures, like cheese and sledding, and embrace your independence.
